After an impressive debut that saw them secure the highest-selling first year album by any K-pop group with just one release and headlining two dates at Tokyo Dome, ENHYPEN have taken time to assess where they have come since November 2020. While they are clearly thankful for all that hard work has brought them thus far – such as amassing seven million followers known as ENGENEs on social media alone, winning multiple best new artist awards, and high profile performances globally – there’s more they want to do with it than simply riding its momentum.

With today’s release of their second EP in their MANIFESTO series, Border: Carnival, the boys have pledged to share all aspects of their journey in every release. That means greater focus on relatable honesty with lyrics that explore celebrity lifestyle while still maintaining musicality that stands out among a competitive field.

That approach to songwriting can be found in the lead single from the deluxe repackage, “Blessed-Cursed,” which explores the all-too-common reality that fame may not always bring. Blending hard rock from the 1970s with Post Malone hip-hop beats for added dimension, this track provides a heady rush before slowing down for examination of generation-Z issues like relationships and living in digital culture.

ENHYPEN stands out in K-pop by creating songs with an authentic yet laidback approach, while many idol groups produce hits using generic formulae. Their songs shift effortlessly between pop, R&B and reggaeton genres with emotive melodies and catchy choruses that feel more genuine than overproduced production often associated with this genre.

The band‘s ability to connect with ENGENEs shines through in their latest performance of “Polaroid Love,” where the boys engage with their audience as they sing the lyrics and give out colorful Polaroid pictures as mementos of their experience. It serves as a clear reminder that their job is to serve their fans, giving their best performance possible in every instance.

With their first year behind them, ENHYPEN are ready to continue climbing global charts with an entirely fresh perspective on what it means to be an artist. Looking ahead, they plan to experiment more freely with other styles and genres beyond their current genres; their aim is not categorization but expanding their fan base as much as possible. Resident-Aussie member Jake asserts: “an artist without their fan base is nothing” while “we believe in our fans”. ENGENEs respond by waving colorful lightsticks at every show and singing along at every show; an engaging relationship that will endure well into the future!
