Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an iconic outdoor amphitheater located on a massive red rock formation near Morrison Colorado, that is famed for its outstanding acoustics and beloved by music fans of all types. Visitors come here for concerts by their favorite musicians or simply to admire its breathtaking surroundings; whatever your pleasure, there is something here for everyone here at this popular outdoor amphitheater!
Red Rocks Amphitheatre was opened in 1941 and since has hosted numerous musical legends. Today it is the most visited outdoor amphitheater in the U.S. and a National Historic Landmark; concerts at Red Rocks can be both majestic and humbling; yet occasionally incidents arise at these concerts – as Nick Stocchero from Big Head Todd and the Monsters recalls one spring night that wasn’t exactly ideal at Red Rocks!
Stocchero noted the Red Rocks venue would sound “like a giant toilet.” Indeed, when his band asked him to play a high note at Red Rocks acoustics were “kind of squirrelly.”
As wind can significantly impact sound quality, and given that steep pitch makes finding an acceptable seat difficult, guests are strongly encouraged to arrive early so they can explore and find spots which suit them.
TicketCity’s seating charts make it easy to locate the ideal Red Rocks seats. Each section is divided into Reserved and General Admission seats; typically the first row will be Reserved while subsequent rows can be General Admission depending on the show.
Amphitheater acoustics are made possible through an unusual combination of geological forces and human ingenuity. Rock formation at the amphitheatre occurred over millions of years, when ancient storms dumped sand and mud that eventually was compressed into stone via the process of lithification. Ship Rock and Creation Rock are two recognizable rock formations at this venue which form a natural bowl effect when tilted upward from stage left and right respectively, producing excellent sound qualities.
The amphitheatre’s steep slope and stunning natural setting make it a favorite spot for exercisers, hikers, picnickers and photographers. Additionally, concerts by Colorado Symphony, Denver Jazz Orchestra and other groups take place here as well as performances. On non-concert days the park fills up with locals exercising while tourists soak up its sights; concert season runs from early spring to late fall featuring various genres of music and movies on schedule.
