The History of Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an iconic musical venue known for its astounding natural acoustics. Over its history, Red Rocks Amphitheatre has hosted world-famous musicians like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Grateful Dead as well as many lesser known acts. Additionally, this natural amphitheater was recently awarded America’s Most Iconic Venue status by Time.

Red Rocks have long been used by ancient tribes, industrial businessmen, settlers, government officials and artists and musicians. Cosmopolitan magazine editor John Brisben Walker hosted concerts on a temporary platform between Ship Rock and Creation Rock and called this area the Garden of Titans.

Construction on this iconic amphitheatre began in 1936 with assistance from the Civilian Conservation Corps and was completed by 1941 – becoming both an historic landmark and home for Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

The Venue

Short walk east from the amphitheatre brings you to the Visitors Center and Trading Post, featuring a free-entry museum showcasing Colorado musicians’ landmark musical moments. Close by is Ship Rock Grille for dining during concerts nights as well as lunch on non-concert days; it also hosts yoga series, summer workout classes, and film series dedicated to cult classics.

The Atmosphere

Red Rocks Amphitheater was packed to capacity on February 3, even with temperatures as low as 14 degrees outside. Fans were treated to music by Atmosphere and friends Sol Messiah, SA-ROC and DJ Abilities performing classic hip hop records that the audience loved.

Atmosphere have quickly established themselves as one of the premier hip-hop acts from Minneapolis, with thoughtful raps that provoke thought and are enjoyable to listen to. Their fan base is strong and they are well known for their live shows.

Common began the concert by engaging the crowd with an energetic freestyle about snow and Colorado, prompting many to sing along to every word and looking genuinely pleased on stage.

The Upper North Lot offers many advantages to people with disabilities, including early entrance privileges and an effortless exit strategy. Furthermore, this lot boasts stunning views to heighten your experience.

Red Rocks plans to improve wheelchair-accessible seating in row 1, while eliminating bench seating from rows 2 and 3, and designate seats 6-23 as being for those with limited mobility; an area directly in front of an on-stage interpreter will also be reserved as seating for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
